A Former Town Now Run by St. Johns County
Forget any old advice about town hall. Hastings dissolved as a municipality on March 1, 2018, after an 82 percent vote, so county offices now hold the keys. Building Services takes permit applications, Floodplain Management answers zone questions, and St. Johns County Utilities runs the Hastings Water System.
Those utilities have changed a lot. County updates list a new $5.75 million wastewater facility, $2.8 million in sewer upgrades including lift stations, and more than 8,000 feet of new transmission mains. The county also says a planned main loop would improve water pressure. Better pressure is good news, though it can find a weak old fitting inside a house, so watch for damp spots after any system work.
Potato Fields, Big Sooey Channel and Older Main Street Houses
Rain is the local story here. Hastings grew from a farm that Thomas Horace Hastings started for Henry Flagler's hotel trade, and it took its name in 1890. It became known as Florida's potato capital, and the flat, cultivated ground around it still shapes how water moves.
The county has been working on that. Public Works built a new drainage system under East St. Johns Avenue and North Orange Street, widened the Big Sooey Channel and added a stormwater pond, using $4.4 million in federal disaster recovery grants. So street flooding near the center has been addressed in part, and low farm roads may still hold water.

Older houses here need their own read. Where a house sits on piers over a crawl space, water stays hidden under the floor and damp air rises into the rooms. We check from below when we can reach it, not only from inside.

The census counted 1,262 people in the Hastings area in 2020, up from 580 in 2010. A Hastings address today may be a house near Main Street or a home well out among the fields, so tell us which when you call.
Milton, Irma and Cracker Swamp Road: Inland Storms Reach Here
Distance from the ocean does not protect you. News4Jax reported nearly a foot of rain from Hurricane Milton in October 2024, with chest-deep water in parts of Hastings, submerged stretches of County Road 13 and Cracker Swamp Road, and houses surrounded. County officials called the area notorious for flooding during coastal storms because of their effect on the St. Johns River. After Irma in 2017, the Ponte Vedra Recorder reported the county administrator's view that inland damage here ran heavier than in Matthew.
If outside water reached your walls, treat it as Category 3. Search your parcel in the county's Flood Zone Viewer before you price repairs.
West on SR 207: How a Visit Runs
The drive out is simple. We leave St. Augustine on SR 207 and pass Elkton and Armstrong to Spuds, where SR 206 comes in, then follow CR 13 down to Main Street. Farms on the edge of town can take longer, so give us your cross road.
Then the work runs in this order:
- Dal Beggs or his son takes your call, at any hour for an emergency.
- We stop the source and read walls and floors with moisture meters and thermal imaging.
- We photograph the damage and draw a moisture map before demolition.
- We give you a free assessment and an estimate, with no high-pressure sales.
- You get a written scope before heavy work, then daily readings until the home reaches the dry standard.

What customers say
5.0 stars on Google from 8 reviews. Quoted as written.
“I needed a second opinion on my water damage cleanup but about 5 minutes after Dal showed up I realized I should have contacted 1 Call FIRST. They immediately got to work drying out my house and explained everything so well which helped relieve so much of the anxiety I was feeling. The communication and work was all top notch. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!”
“Dal and his son are so compassionate and truly care about the human and do everything in their power to help your house back to normal. They were punctual and even showed back up to the house with any questions etc, I was very pleased with them and would recommend them to anyone who wants someone honest in this industry that unfortunately doesn’t have many honest companies in it. Dal and his crew have a customer life with us anytime we need their services.”

Hastings questions
Is Hastings still a town?
Not as a government. Voters chose to dissolve the town in November 2017, and St. Johns County took over on March 1, 2018. The name and the community remain, but permits now go through county Building Services, and water and sewer run through St. Johns County Utilities. Old town paperwork can still turn up in property records.
Who do I call about Hastings water service?
Call St. Johns County Utilities, which runs the Hastings Water System from two wells in the Floridan Aquifer. Boil water notices for Hastings come from the county too. Once your supply is back, check the walls and floors for leaks, especially if the house sat without pressure. If something is wet, call us for a free assessment.
My farmhouse is on a private well. Does flooding change anything?
Yes, a flooded well needs its own check before anyone drinks from it. Ask the county health department what testing it recommends. We do not test or treat wells, and our work is the structure: extraction, flood cuts where needed, drying and records. Septic systems can also struggle in saturated ground, so hold off on heavy water use.
Can you get out to farm homes well past Spuds?
Yes, outlying farm roads are part of our coverage. Give us your road and the nearest crossing with SR 207 or CR 13, since rural addresses can be hard to find and low spots can hold water after a storm. We will tell you honestly how the route looks before we leave, and you do not need to be on a main road.
